If you’re a fan of spine-tingling mysteries, eerie atmospheres, and stories inspired by real-life events, BHAY – The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery should be on your watchlist. Directed by Robbie Grewal and based on Abhirup Dhar’s book Ghost Hunter Gaurav Tiwari: The Life and Legacy of India’s Foremost Paranormal Investigator, this limited series takes viewers deep into the life of India’s most famous ghost hunter. With an unusual premise and a layered narrative, it promises intrigue, suspense, and an emotional undercurrent that keeps you hooked.
Story
The series opens in 2006 with young Gaurav Tiwari (Karan Tacker) enjoying a casual house party in Delhi. A seemingly harmless séance to summon the host’s grandmother takes a strange turn when her spirit communicates through Gaurav. While he brushes it off as a playful act, one friend senses something truly unsettling happened.
Gaurav’s life changes after a near-death experience during his pilot training in the UK — an incident he claims was averted by the spirit of a deceased pilot. His account, however, isn’t believed, costing him his place at the academy. Returning to India, Gaurav channels his passion into founding the Indian Paranormal Society, joined by dedicated members Megha (Saloni Batra), Siddharth (Danish Sood), and Raj (Shubham Chaudhary). Their investigations take them across India, tackling unexplained hauntings and strange phenomena.
A decade later, Gaurav’s sudden and suspicious death shakes the team. Author Irene Venkat (Kalki Koechlin) begins documenting his life, uncovering the unsettling possibility that one of their old cases may be tied to his demise. The series unravels this mystery, blending past and present into an engaging supernatural investigation.
Performances
Karan Tacker delivers a standout performance, capturing Gaurav’s charm, determination, and growing obsession with authenticity. After his acclaimed turns in Special Ops 2 and Tanvi The Great, this role further cements his versatility. Kalki Koechlin brings quiet strength and depth to her role as Irene, while Saloni Batra leaves her mark as a strong supporting lead. Danish Sood and Shubham Chaudhary bring believability to their investigative roles, and Nimisha Nair, despite limited screen time, leaves a solid impression. Among the supernatural portrayals, Adarsh Marathe as “Bachuaa” stands out as the only truly chilling ghost.
Behind the Scenes
Robbie Grewal directs with an eye for pacing, keeping episodes tight — aside from the opening episode’s longer runtime, which effectively sets the stage for Gaurav’s journey. The writing by Arshad Syed keeps the viewer engaged with a non-linear structure that’s easy to follow, punctuated by natural-sounding dialogues.
Technically, the series benefits from Aditya Kapur’s striking cinematography and a background score by Sangeet and Siddharth Haldipur that adds tension. The partial use of found-footage technique enhances authenticity, though some visual effects fall short in realism. Costumes by Sachin Lovalekar feel grounded, while the production design occasionally leans toward theatricality.
Final Verdict
BHAY – The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery succeeds in offering a fresh spin on India’s supernatural genre, powered by a compelling true-story inspiration, engaging performances, and a suspenseful hook tying past events to the protagonist’s death. While not consistently scary and hampered by some underwhelming ghost visuals, the series keeps you invested through its central mystery.
A more robust promotional campaign could have amplified its reach, but with strong word of mouth, it has the potential to become a sleeper hit. If you enjoy stories that straddle the line between the paranormal and the personal, this one is worth your binge.
⭐ Rating: 3/5 – Intriguing, atmospheric, and anchored by Karan Tacker’s commanding performance.
