BAFTA 2026: Night of Surprises and Cinematic Triumphs in London
The 79th British Academy Film Awards lit up London’s Royal Festival Hall in a dazzling celebration of global filmmaking excellence. Held at the Southbank Centre, the 2026 BAFTAs delivered an evening of suspense, diversity, and historic moments, showcasing the year’s most powerful cinematic achievements across genres and geographies.

One Battle After Another Leads the Pack with Six Major Wins
Paul Thomas Anderson’s gripping war epic One Battle After Another emerged as the night’s standout victor, securing five prestigious awards. The film took home Best Film, Best Director for Anderson, Supporting Actor (Sean Penn), Adapted Screenplay, and Editing.
Trailing closely behind, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners claimed three awards, including Original Screenplay, Cinematography, and Original Score by Ludwig Göransson. Meanwhile, Frankenstein impressed with wins in Costume Design, Make-Up & Hair, and Production Design, highlighting its visual mastery.
Breakthroughs and Global Recognition
Jessie Buckley won Leading Actress for her moving performance in Hamnet, which also earned Outstanding British Film. Robert Aramayo captured Leading Actor and the fan-voted EE Rising Star Award for I Swear, marking a breakout moment in his career.
In a landmark achievement, the Indian family film Boong triumphed in the Children’s & Family Film category—showcasing the growing global influence of South Asian cinema.
International acclaim went to Norway’s Sentimental Value, winning Film Not in the English Language, while the powerful documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin took the Documentary prize.
Celebrating Emerging Talent and Craft Excellence
Akinola Davies Jr. and Wale Davies won Outstanding Debut for My Father’s Shadow, spotlighting fresh British storytelling. Animation fans celebrated Zootopia 2’s win, and technical brilliance shone through in Avatar: Fire and Ash claiming Special Visual Effects.
Gareth John, Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Gary A. Rizzo, and Juan Peralta won the award in Sound category for their brilliant work in F1.
Short-form excellence was recognized with Two Black Boys in Paradise and This Is Endometriosis winning in their respective animation and live-action categories.
