Netflix has captivated audiences with a controversial series that has amassed 2.4 million views. Leading up to its launch, the new show incited anger among viewers. Despite being criticized prior to its premiere, this psychological thriller has climbed the ranks on Netflix’s most-watched list, with enthusiastic fans encouraging others to watch.
Bet, which was released on May 15th, faced backlash from fans of the beloved manga on which it is based. The ten-episode series draws inspiration from the Japanese Kakegurui manga, created by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura. The story unfolds at St. Dominic’s private school, where gambling determines social prestige.
The arrival of transfer student Yumeko (played by Miku Martineau) disrupts the school’s hierarchy as she takes on the entire student council with her gambling prowess.
After the trailer’s unveiling last month, viewers took to the comments section on the streamer’s YouTube channel to express their dissatisfaction. Many voiced concerns that the live-action adaptation would cater to European and American tastes, losing its Asian essence in the process.
“What? Kakegurui didn’t require a Westernized version,” one commenter wrote. Another humorously added, “Somebody call the cops; Netflix has ruined Kakegurui.”
Regardless of the criticism, the show has garnered more than 2.4 million views in just one week and ranks among Netflix’s top-watched series in 32 countries.
Additionally, the thriller has received an impressive 73% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with some viewers clamoring for a second season. One fan expressed, “I binged all the episodes on the first day. I can’t wait for season 2,” while another added, “Fantastic series, hope for a sequel.“
The same enthusiasm is apparent on X (formerly Twitter), where one user suggested, “If you’re looking for something to watch tonight, I highly recommend Bet on Netflix.”
Another viewer admitted their addiction, saying, “People might be complaining about the Bet series on Netflix, but I love it; I find entertainment in nearly anything.”
A third viewer proclaimed it “Netflix’s best show right now.”
Bet is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
