Arjun Son of Vyjayanthi is the latest Telugu emotional action drama that has just hit theaters, featuring Nandamuri Kalyan Ram and veteran actress Vijayashanti in pivotal roles, with Pradeep Chilukuri at the helm as director. This film premiered today amid reasonable expectations.

Story

The film revolves around a heartfelt mother-son relationship interwoven with action and emotion. Vyjayanthi, portrayed as a tough and principled police officer, aspires for her son Arjun to become a dedicated IPS officer like her. However, an unforeseen encounter with a mafia kingpin directs Arjun down an alternative path.

Although Arjun doesn’t intend to become a criminal, he transforms into a vigilante, confronting the local mafia to safeguard his community. This new life leads to conflict with his mother, who disapproves of his methods and grows distant from him. Forced to move to a labor colony, Arjun eventually ascends to become one of the most powerful gangsters in Vizag, all the while championing the welfare of society.

Tension escalates with the arrival of a new police commissioner, played by Srikanth, who uncovers that the notorious gangster is actually Vyjayanthi’s son. Meanwhile, Vyjayanthi continues to pressure Arjun to surrender and adhere to the law. The narrative unfolds as Arjun grapples with his conflicting loyalties—his mother’s expectations, the police’s pursuit, and his commitment to protect the people of Vizag.

Performances

Kalyan Ram embodies the role of a devoted son and action hero, showcasing a blend of emotional depth and action that he has characterized in previous roles. While the film leans heavily on action sequences, he executes them effectively, and when it comes to emotional scenes—though sparse—he manages to deliver adequately. His styling remains conventional, yet he maintains a commendable presence. It’s in the climax, particularly in the final moments, that Kalyan Ram surprises viewers with an unexpected twist, marking a standout moment in his performance and affirming his decision to take on this role. Overall, he aligns well with the film’s conventional commercial narrative.

Vijayashanti makes a long-awaited return to the silver screen, stepping into the shoes of a police officer—a role in which she once excelled. While it’s delightful to see her back, her character’s styling falls short. A thoughtful wardrobe and accessories could have significantly enhanced her screen presence. Unfortunately, the script underutilizes her talent, limiting her ability to make a lasting impression. Although her age is apparent, the lack of proper styling detracts from her charm. Nonetheless, her return evokes a sense of nostalgia. As for the heroine, Saiee Manjrekar, her contribution is minimal and could easily be overlooked.

Behind the scenes

Director Pradeep Chilukuri manages to convey a familiar storyline with competent narration; however, a stronger emphasis on emotional dialogue and writing could have augmented the film’s impact.

The screenplay by Srikanth Vissa is sufficiently engaging, while Ram Prasad’s cinematography ensures a visually appealing experience. Thammiraju’s editing is sharp, and the film maintains a balanced runtime, backed by decent production values.

Ajaneesh Loknath’s music complements the film well, though some tracks feel reminiscent of existing popular scores, which is a minor drawback and none of the tunes leave a memorable impact. Nevertheless, the background score enhances the film’s heroic moments effectively.

Final Verdict

Arjun Son of Vyjayanthi begins on a solid note, demonstrating the director’s adeptness in crafting compelling action sequences. The first half offers engaging characterizations imbued with sincerity. However, as the story transitions into the second half, it adopts a more dated style, losing some creativity and freshness post the initial action sequences. The much-anticipated climax delivers to some degree, incorporating a mild twist that may satisfy mass audiences.

In conclusion, Arjun Son of Vyjayanthi contains notable moments aimed at mass appeal but lacks substance for more discerning viewers. Its appeal may vary among younger audiences. For Kalyan Ram fans, Nandamuri enthusiasts, or those who enjoy mass-oriented cinema, the film offers a moderately satisfying experience. However, it may disappoint those preferring content-driven narratives or stylish storytelling, making it safe for them to skip.
