"Michael" moves to April 2026: Out of Oscar race

Lionsgate has announced a new release date for the Michael Jackson biopic titled Michael, which is now scheduled to premiere in theaters and IMAX worldwide on April 24, 2026.

In the United States and Canada, Lionsgate will handle distribution, while Kino Films is responsible for Japan, and Universal will distribute the film in other regions.

The film, produced by Graham King and directed by Antoine Fuqua, features Jaafar Jackson, the pop icon’s nephew, in the lead role. Initially, the release was planned for April this year but was later postponed to October.

Lionsgate executives indicated in May that a move to spring 2026 was probable, with discussions underway regarding the possibility of dividing the project into two films instead of one. Recent sources suggest that a second film is currently in development.

This second film seems to have become viable after Fuqua presented three-and-a-half hours of what Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer described as “incredible footage.”

However, it has also been reported that challenges have emerged concerning the depiction of an individual who previously accused the late Jackson of sexual misconduct. Although the renowned performer settled the case without admitting guilt, earlier this year, reports indicated there was an understanding with the Jackson estate that the accuser would not be portrayed in the film.

Produced by Graham King, an Oscar winner for The Departed and a nominee for Bohemian Rhapsody, the film Michael features Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the King of Pop and son of Jermaine Jackson, in the lead role. The movie chronicles Michael Jackson’s career from his beginnings with the Jackson 5 to his passing in 2009.

Colman Domingo, aiming for his third Oscar nomination, portrays the family patriarch Joe Jackson, while Nia Long takes on the role of matriarch Katherine Jackson. The ensemble cast also includes Miles Teller, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, Laura Harrier, and Derek Luke. The screenplay has been penned by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan.
