Lulu Wilson The Wrath Of Becky

The Wrath of Becky Review

The Wrath of Becky (2023) Film Review, a movie directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, written by Nick Morris, Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote and starring Lulu Wilson, Seann William Scott, Denise Burse, Jill Larson, Michael Sirow, Aaron Dalla Villa, Matt Angel, Courtney Gains, Pac Williams, Alison Cimmet, Derek Gaines, John D. Hickman, Kate Siegel and Gabriella Piazza.

Lulu Wilson is a teenager named Becky who is hellbent on revenge in an enjoyable splatter-fest from Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, The Wrath of Becky. Wilson takes her role and runs with it which creates a very memorable horror picture experience for fans of movies chock full of blood, humor and craziness. Seann William Scott (better known as Stifler from the American Pie films) plays a key heavy/terrorist named Darryl in this film and Scott is on-point with one of his better serious performances to date.

The film opens with the information that Becky has lost her mom and dad (both for different reasons) and was taken in by Elena (Denise Burse), an older woman who respects Becky as she earns her own living working as a waitress at a local diner. An older male customer calls Becky “sweetheart” and she automatically imagines slicing his throat for the disrespectful label. Becky is full of passionate intensity and loves her dog, Diego (credited as Pac Williams). Soon, Becky drops a cup of coffee on a guy who is part of a trio of crude men who come into the diner (the director, Matt Angel, plays one of them named Sean). These men are bigots who soon want to do bad things to Becky.

In short order, the three vicious men come to Becky’s home where they hurt Diego and end up killing Elena when she tries to protect Becky. When Becky wakes up, she vows revenge as she hunts down the horrendous men who wronged her. Seann William Scott’s Darryl comes into the picture and steals the movie with his terrifying turn as Darryl whose headquarters are discovered by Becky after doing some research which first has her meeting an older woman also named Darryl (the great Jill Larson) who smokes despite having medical problems.

This movie pretty much sets up a promise to the audience that Becky will deliver vengeance on to the racist, women-hating slime who are the three guys who have also ended up kidnapping Diego. Don’t mess with a girl’s dog. Not Becky’s dog at least, anyway. The Wrath of Becky delivers on its promise to be a bloody good time with our heroine taking on the creepy men one at a time with one of the older guys in the extended group pleading for his life saying that he has a son to raise. When he admits his son’s name is “Adolf,” Becky basically, as expected, shows no mercy.

What sets The Wrath of Becky apart from other revenge movies is its fast pace and its stylistic elements which all come together to create a memorable and entertaining horror film. Scott doesn’t hold back in terms of being a bad guy the audience will love to hate and viewers will want to see Darryl get his just desserts by the time the credits come up. Ditto the other villains in the film as well.

Lulu Wilson is remarkably sarcastic and energetic in her role right from the opening scene where she is adopted and sneaks out of her bedroom window with Diego by her side. Wilson takes the role and runs with it. Jill Larson proves to be the movie’s most valuable player as her character comes back into the action later in the picture with Larson’s Darryl proving to be a threatening on-screen presence. Larson doesn’t hold back and revels in her icy cold turn. This is some of Larson’s most proficient acting to date.

Scott is a reliable vicious baddie. The film ends up pitting Becky against Scott’s Darryl with results that will have audiences truly invested in the bloody action that transpires. Denise Burse is also super in her fine, but brief, yet rather relevant, turn in the movie.

There are some problems here, though. The picture, which still works as a stand alone film from the other movie where Wilson played Becky (aptly titled Becky), could have shown us more in terms of pieces of the first movie to fill in the blanks. Instead, it relies on narration by Wilson which should have been replaced with a little montage of sequences from the Becky movie. Another flaw is that the villains become stupid when they need to be which takes tension away from some of the more terrifying moments in the picture which could have been tighter.

Kate Siegel’s appearance in the closing scene as Agent Kate Montana also sets up another film in the series which could end up coming into fruition if this new film is a hit. The Wrath of Becky is fast-paced fun for people who can take the bloody sequences sprinkled throughout the movie. If you liked Evil Dead Rise, watching this one will be no problem for you. It’s equally as good.

Rating: 7/10
